Six Flags Over Georgia has officially opened for the 2017 season. The park opened this past Saturday March 11, and debuted a few new attractions for the 50th anniversary being celebrated. The park’s Acrophobia drop tower has been transformed into the new Drop of Doom VR for a limited time. Guests will be able to take the plunger 100 feet as they battle mutant spiders in a virtual world. Also over the weekend the Park President Dale Kaetzel followed through on a bet with sister park Six Flags New England by renaming the park’s SkyScreamer the Patriot’s SkyScreamer. He also rode the ride while wearing a Patriots jersey.
As many fans gathered wearing Atlanta Falcons gear to cheer on the Park President riding out a lost bet, many of the fans were also eager to get their hands on a limited availability of New England clam chowder. The option was available to season pass dining holders. As the bet was carried out and park guests continued to take in the opening festivities those eager to get an opportunity to conquer Drop of Doom VR finally had their chance.
Drop of Doom VR will be open for a limited time and is free with park admission. The VR technology has been at Six Flags Over Georgia this past season as the park debuted The New Revolution on their current Dare Devil Dive coaster. Riders on Drop of Doom VR will rise 100 feet above the ground before plummeting back to earth. The mutant spiders will surround riders as they battle them in a competitive feature with other riders. Once the ride comes to the bottom a large mutant spider will give riders one last thrill.
“We continue to explore new opportunities utilizing Samsung Gear VR technology and this drop tower concept is a great example of the ability to change content for different rides,” said Six Flags Atlanta Properties Park President Dale Kaetzel. “We look forward to having our guests experience Drop of Doom as we kick off the beginning of a very special year, filled with new thrills, new reasons to visit and new memories to be made with family and friends.”
Later this spring, Six Flags Over Georgia will debut Justice League: Battle for Metropolis. This new attraction is scheduled to open May 26.
Six Flags Over Georgia is open on weekends March 11 through May 14 and daily for Spring Break April 1 – 9. Summer daily operation begins on May 20. Season Passes and the All Season Dining Pass to Six Flags Over Georgia and Six Flags White Water in Marietta, which provide unlimited visits and meals all season long, are available online.
